Hello, Shrinivaskulkarni1388. The first thing to do is read this important page about image policy. It has information about what kind of photograph you may be able to add to an article. Wikipedia has certain rules about what is ok or not. If you're ready to upload a picture, use the "Upload file" link in the "Tools" menu. Let us know if you have any questions. Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key

Hi there I tried to update some latest events for tourism development bank using the references given below but it shows some error. Could some body help me please?? http://www.sharesansar.com/c/tourism-development-bank-starts-joint-operation-after-acquiring-matribhumi-and-kalinchowk-dev-bank.html â€" Preceding unsigned comment added by Juren Khatri (talk • contribs) 07:37, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Juren Khatri, you used the same reference name tag, <ref name="Sharesansar">, for two different web addresses. The article is short, so you don't need to use the "name" tag. Just use the "cite web" tag without the preceding "name" tag. If you did use the "name" tag, subsequent uses would look like this, <ref name = "Sharesansar"/>, without including the same full web address again. That's what it's for; it's an efficiency tool. DonFB (talk) 07:58, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
One more thing, Juren Khatri. You should use a <ref> tag before and a </ref> tag after each "cite web" reference. DonFB (talk) 09:03, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Delete a Wiki Page

Hi there I created a page and I would now like to delete it as we need more online articles and interviews to be able to make this page acceptable on Wikipedia. How do I do this. I have deleted all the text ? GSmusic (talk) 08:47, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi GSmusic and welcome to the TeaHouse. The article in question is Matt Nicholson (composer). If you're planning to work on expanding the article, a better option might be to have the old version (with content) copied over to a User Draft, which will allow you time to work on it and get it right. Make sure you specify which old version you want - the process for getting this done is at Wikipedia:Userfication. --Gronk Oz (talk) 09:23, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Ranked list guidance

Is anyone aware of any information pages, guidelines, or policies on ranked lists (whether stand-alone or embedded)) and, more specifically, the way sourcing and original research interplay with them. By ranked list, I mean (for example) lists of the x most viewed viral videos, the ten best types of widgets, and the like. I realize that there may be other problems with many if not most of these lists, such as NOT and UNDUE, but there are a couple of inquiries about them at the NOR noticeboard and before opining there, I'd like to be sure there's no preexisting guidance on the NOR/sourcing issues. Anyone familiar with any? Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 18:32, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

  • Having looked at the NORN cases, I think one policy to account for is WP:CALC. I think that would justify to source e.g. an article "list of countries by apple production" (IINFO may apply, of course) to an "atlas of apple production" that does not rank the productions (but gives all the numbers). On the other hand, the NORN issues seem to be more about taking info from different sources, in which case the standard WP:SYNTH, and also common sense (when the methodology is important, don't do it!) caveat applies. TigraanClick here to contact me 18:52, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
    • WP:V and WP:NOR apply to lists just as they do to prose articles. There are no exceptions; all you have to do is to simply abide by the policy. â€" Finnusertop (talk â‹… contribs) 20:31, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Edit for Poplar Bluff Mayoral List

Good afternoon! I am the City Clerk for the City of Poplar Bluff in Missouri. I received a call from a woman who stated she knew her father was Mayor here in our town in the mid 70's but that someone had contacted her and said there were discrepancies on the Wikipedia page relative to Poplar Bluff Mayors. She is correct as I have looked over the list for the last hour or so and there are many dates that are incorrect and some Mayors who have been omitted. Is this something that I can edit myself and if so how can I insert a new row or cell to put this info into? Please feel free to give me a call at my office at <redacted>. Thank you!

Hi Pamela, thanks for asking. It would be better if you didn't edit the page yourself, because of our Conflict of Interest policy. All information in a Wikipedia article needs to be backed up by reliable published sources. Is there any document or webpage you can point us to that gives the correct and complete list of mayors? A couple of other things: No one will call you; all discussion will take place within Wikipedia. I've redacted your number to save you from unwanted calls. Secondly, discussion about a particular page should take place on that article's talk page, in this case Talk:Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Regards, Rojomoke (talk) 22:13, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

How do I improve the appearance on mobile?

I just added a big section to Deseret alphabet, #Handwriting. I want to make this into a WP:FA (even though I really don't know if I'll ever get there or not, so far I haven't even passed a GA nom but that's off topic)

But it looks really ugly on mobile. [3] It's because I have to display the tables large for it to look good on PC. A wikilink to the page itself like Wikipedia:Help desk is displayed as bold unlinked text. See Help:Self link. Users with customized signatures usually just accept this. MediaWiki:Signature stores the default signature. It adds an anchor #top to signatures on the user's own talk page to avoid the bold selflink feature. It's possible for a customized signature to use similar code and for example insert {{#ifeq:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|User talk:L3X1|#top}} right after User talk:L3X1. Article name

There is an Argentine TV series named "Estocolmo", with no article here yet. However, that word is Stockholm in Spanish language. What I would do is use Estocolmo for the series and no hatnote for the city because this is not the Spanish Wikipedia. Fictitious subjects

Is there a tag meaning "the subject of this article appears to be fictitious"? I am thinking of That Poppy. Maproom (talk) 07:26, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

There's Template:Hoax, but I don't think that's appropriate. She seems to be a real person. For example, she's got a page on iTunes. Whether she's notable enough to satisfy WP:MUSICBIO is another issue. Clarityfiend (talk) 08:21, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
She's not a hoax, and she's notable, but I see no evidence that she's a real person. My impression is that she's a creation of "Titanic Sinclair". Maproom (talk) 09:42, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
"Poppy's real name and identity is kept guarded..." What is the distinction between a mere stage name and a fictitious character? BTW, my security software won't let me see her web site due to the number of reports of security violations there. --Gronk Oz (talk) 14:50, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Her real name is hardly a state secret, given that she's credited as the author on her songs under it. â€' Iridescent 18:54, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
The difference is that there's a real person and real talent (hopefully) behind the stage name. A musician, whether you call him Muddy Waters or McKinley Morganfield, is still a musician. (Same can, different label.) An actor playing a character, on the other hand, is an entirely different story: Bruce Willis ain't no John McClane. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:22, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
I now accept that she's probably a real person, not an electronic creation as I had thought. Maproom (talk) 08:51, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Very confusing UX when trying to create a new account re: usernames

Hi! When trying to create a new account, I kept receiving the message 'username already exists,' but when searching for my desired new usernames, they didn't appear in the list of existing usernames.

I ultimately found one that worked, but it took more than 3 tries. That's a very confusing new user experience and might deter some new wikipedians from creating accounts.

If the username already exists, it should appear in the list of existing usernames when someone searches for it. If it doesn't, new users should be allowed to use it!

Is this a known problem?

Thanks. â€" Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.115.85.94 (talk) 15:16, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

IP, which usernames did you try? And which username finally worked? -- Samtar talk · contribs 15:36, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
The English Wikipedia is one of hundreds of wikis run by the same organisation with a unified account system. You didn't say which names you tried or where you looked them up but Special:ListUsers only shows accounts which exist here at the English Wikipedia. Usernames have to be unique among all wikis run by the Wikimedia Foundation. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:46, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for getting in touch, and welcome to the fold of Wikipedia editors. When you say that you searched for a user name, was this using the normal Wikipedia search bar? If so, did you search for "XXX", or for "User:XXX"? Unlike social media, Wikipedia is not principally focused on the editors, but rather on articles they have written for readers. So searching for "XXX" will search for an article of that name, not for a user unless you add the prefix "User:". Does that explain your experience? --Gronk Oz (talk) 22:37, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Article Title Needs Changing

How do you go about getting an incorrect article title changed? The title "Winkler Scale" misrepresents what is known as the "Winkler Index". The Winkler Index was established by the original researchers in 1944 and has been used extensively in viticulture (winegrape growing). I did a search of research and journal databases and found no instance of "Winkler Scale" being used.

Thank You, gvjones â€" Preceding unsigned comment added by Gvjones (talk • contribs) 18:38, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

It does appear that "Winkler index" is the more frequently used term, so I have moved the article to that title. It is odd that none of the references in the article, that I can access on-line, call it Winkler anything. Maproom (talk) 19:15, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Think this can clarify the confusion between indexes-scales when used in common speech.--Aspro (talk) 19:26, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Can't find the right place to post this question. Perhaps you can help out?

Hi, I tried using help pages to find the best place to post my question but found myself caught in a circle of links, so I'll try here.

Would it be against policy to participate in an RfC using multiple accounts? If this is not the place for the answer, could you be so kind as to link where I can find the answer or where I should ask? I have looked at sockpuppetry which seems that it would, but I'm not certain that my interpretation is correct. Thanks for your help. Veritycheckâœ"️ (talk) 19:30, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

This is generally covered under the part that says, "Inappropriate uses of alternative accounts: Editing project space: Undisclosed alternative accounts are not to be used in discussions internal to the project". -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:32, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your speedy reply. The user in question mentions it on his own user page but not within the discussion page of the article itself. Is this acceptable? Is this considered disclosed? Veritycheckâœ"️ (talk) 19:52, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Generally, a prominent notice on the account's user page would be considered to be disclosure. A similar or recognisable username would also be considered additionally beneficial. This particular example you're talking about is not really against policy, but whether it's a good thing ideally implemented is another question. -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:19, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Considering that (a) my two account names (Malik Shabazz and MShabazz) are clearly related, (b) the relationship between the accounts is clearly disclosed on User:Malik Shabazz and User:MShabazz, and (c) Veritycheck asked me what the relationship was and I told him to look at my user pages, I think this discussion raises serious questions about his competence to edit the encyclopedia. â€" Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 22:33, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Really? I didn't realize we had implemented any constraints on how experienced an editor had to be before they were allowed to ask a question. All the facts you mention were already stated, so thanks for confirming them. The question was not about those facts, but rather about how to interpret the policies in this case. That's not a trivial exercise, especially for a relatively new editor, and to my mind this is just the sort of thing the Help Desk is here for. --Gronk Oz (talk) 22:51, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
(Personal attack removed) really? He was too fucking lazy to click on my username to learn for himself that the two accounts are alts, and too lazy to click on WP:VALIDALT, so he started a WP:SPI? That's what I call laziness and incompetence. â€" Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 23:15, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Last time I looked, Civility was a policy alongside No personal attacks, which you would have thought is not too confusing. It's a fair enquiry - are editors allowed to swap between alternate accounts in a discussion without stating that they're the same person? Which of the legitimate sock uses would seem to apply here? What's the relationship to the forbidden use of "contributing to the same discussion with multiple accounts"? Should someone have to follow links to userpages to see if it's the same user? I seem to recall this is not the first time this has happened. Whatever problems there may be elsewhere, the help desk welcomes such requests for clarification. -- zzuuzz (talk) 02:06, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Shabazz I have a suggestion. Whenever I sign with my alternate account, the signature left is of my original account (I've gone into the preferences of my alternate account and used the wiki markup of my original account for my signature). You could probably do that too and avoid this confusion. Thus, even when you're using your alternate account, editors would know it is you. Having said that, I think the discussion out here doesn't need to be harsh. This is finally a help desk, and volunteers like zzuuzz or me simply assist in providing clarifications, and not in passing judgements or resolutions. Rest is up to you. Now all of you, please pose for the snap post the bout. Cheers. Lourdes 08:06, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
  • I would say it depends. If you use two different accounts to post a !vote, it is clearly incorrect (even if the user pages disclose the relationship both ways). If you reply with account B because that's the one you are logged in while you first comment was made with account A, I think it is fine unless you are trying to be deceptive. (Of course, answering "B, are you related to account A?" by "go see the user pages" rather than "yes" which is shorter and more descriptive is borderline trolling - but I suspect the temperature of the discussion was already fairly high at that point.) Gold, Platinum and Diamond certification capitalization

When talking about List of music recording certifications - is it appropriate to capitalize Platinum, Gold and Diamond in articles? On that article, they are capitalized. I am not seeing anything in the WP:MOSALBUM to support this though. Some of my edits are being reverted for the reason of "But FA articles don't capitalize them". FA articles can be incorrect too!

On the MOSALBUM talk page, it is stated that it's capitalized on the RIAA website and also trademarked. It is also capitalized on the BPI [British] certifications site. Also, in Certification tables, it capitalizes Platinum, Gold, etc, even if it isn't the first word (for example: 3× Platinum) --Jennica✿ / talk 20:34, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

  • I think the names of certifications should be treated like proper names and capitalized. If not capitalized, it may look like the albums are actually made of gold, platinum, diamonds, etc. (That's just logically speaking.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 06:55, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

If you still want a link to appear on User:TonyTheTiger/creations then I think your only option is to make an "external" link with a url instead of a wikilink. That may be difficult for template-generated links. See Wikipedia:Plainlink if you want to avoid external link icons. External link syntax affects other features. For example it doesn't generate a WhatLinksHere entry. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:59, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

See zh:Help:中文维基百ç§'的繁简、地区词处理. If it's not what you need or it doesn't work on iPhone, ask on Chinese Wikipedia. Maybe even here: zh:维基百ç§':äº'助客栈/技术.
(I don't think there is anyone here on this page who can help you. I remember when I needed to transliterate Chinese characters, I just copy-pasted text into Google Translate. It worked for me, but useless to anyone who needs to transliterate more than a few sentences once in a while. :-))

Corsican Wikipedia

At the main page of wikipedia.org, I see Corsu (Corsican) listed at the top right, above Deutsch (German) and Русский (Russian). What gives? Maproom (talk) 08:47, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

  • I don't see it (from a Russian IP address). But I'm suprised to see Russian in the top left. Cause it's not the most popular wiki and previosly the wikis were ordered by the number of views. Could it be that now the order is based on the viewer's IP? --Moscow Connection (talk) 08:52, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
I find I only see this using Chrome, on two different and unconnected computers. So it may be something Google is doing. Also, a few days ago (so I may have the details slightly wrong), I was looking at a page on de:Wikipedia when Google Translate offered to translate it for me. I agreed - and it translated it into Corsican. Maproom (talk) 08:59, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
Same thing in IE for me, Russian is at the top left. I don't really remember when I last visited the main page, but quite some time ago Russian was listed after Spanish. (With the exception of 2014 when Russian Wiki was more popular than Spanish one. Probably because of Crimea, etc.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:10, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
I have an idea.
Chrome > Settings > Show advanced settings > Languages > Language and input settings > "Add languages and drag to order them based on your preference" and "Use this language for spell checking". --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:12, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
â†' I've had some success with this. After I set "English (United States)" as preferred, Russian Wiki moved to the top right. (It's English that's in the top left corner now.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:18, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you! That's fixed it. I wonder how that mis-setting got into all three of my computers. Maproom (talk) 09:35, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia database schema

Does the Wikipedia database schema equal the schema of a normal mediawiki? Does the dump "All pages with complete page edit history" include tables wich can be safely truncated? (like cache tables). Does this dump include the complete WP including META pages, logging, user pages, user related tables and so on? --91.17.61.9 (talk) 10:18, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

  • Hello there. Have you gone through Wikipedia:Database download#Database schema and mw:Manual:Database layout and MediaWiki database schema and.... phew... no wonder it's called a dump :) Write back after going through the links, if you still want additional clarification. Thanks. Lourdes 11:09, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
All right, thank you. Seems like the WP has the same schema then a regular mediawiki. And thanks for the link to the schema, that was way better then the version that i found. There are still the questions about whats included in the database dump. I am not very happy with the size of that database :). So i want to cut out everything i do not need. Any multimedia tables for example. Caching tables sounds like i can drop that also without any consequenses or data loss. I do not want to set up a mediawiki based on that. I need only the database itself for metadata analysis. Wich leeds to the next question. Are there all the user and logging tables included? --2003:76:4E00:B261:E5FC:DF01:1157:CE9F (talk) 12:24, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

An article that has different titles but have the same content

Hello Wikipedia!

I am the creator of Draft: List of Billboard 200 top 10 albums in 2017 When I created the page, I was not sure how to drop the Draft part in my title. Recently, Another Wikipedia account created List of Billboard 200 top 10 albums in 2017 which has the same ideas as mine regarding Billboard 200's Top 10 albums for each week. Knowing that I created my page before this account created theirs, I think their account might have some false information. What should I do to take action? Or is their nothing I can do since the page is already created? Thank You! â€" Preceding unsigned comment added by Cgodw226 (talk • contribs) 15:39, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
